Wolves Relegated: Rob Edwards Faces Championship Rebuild After Tragic Season

Wolves' Premier League relegation was confirmed after West Ham's draw at Crystal Palace on Monday, ending an eight-year top-flight stay. Manager Rob Edwards took charge in November with a near-impossible task, inheriting a squad that had been anchored to the bottom of the table since week three. Despite a wretched season yielding just three wins, Edwards restored some unity - his emotional sprint after Rodrigo Gomes' stoppage-time winner against Aston Villa in February symbolized a club trying to find its identity.

The writing had been on the wall for years. Wolves sold their best players - Matheus Cunha (£62.5m to Manchester United), Rayan Ait-Nouri (£36m to Manchester City), Raul Jimenez, Diogo Jota and Ruben Neves - without adequate replacement. Last summer's £45m trio of David Moller Wolfe, Tolu Arokodare and Jackson Tchatchoua made minimal impact, while Jhon Arias was sold back to Palmeiras for just over £20m. Fan protests against owners Fosun and former executive chairman Jeff Shi - who departed in December - underscored the fractures at a club circling the drain.

Financially, Wolves remain stable despite relegation. They posted a £15.3m loss for 2024/25 but made a £117m profit on player sales. With 18-year-old Mateu Mane a rare bright spot and Joao Gomes and Andre expected to depart, the club faces another rebuild. Nathan Shi now leads the hierarchy, and there's relief at a clean slate after years of transfer regret.
