Newly crowned five-time Tour de France champion Tadej Pogacar will compete in this month's Vuelta a Espana, aiming to complete a historic Grand Tour treble.

After winning the 2024 Giro d'Italie by nearly 10 minutes, the Slovenian rider is the runaway favourite; only nine cyclists have ever achieved this feat. He said, “I’m excited to say I’m going back to La Vuelta,” noting that Spain is a country he loves and the timing feels right.

The race starts in Monaco on 22 August and finishes in Granada on 13 September, covering 21 stages that include time trials, sprints, rolling hills and high mountains. Pogacar has won six of seven World Tour events this season, adding the Tour of Flanders three times, Milan‑San Remo, the Road World Championships twice, Il Lombardia five times and Liège‑Bastogne‑Liège four times, showing relentless form. He is also set to defend his rainbow jersey in Montreal just a week after the Vuelta.

Having beaten Belgium’s Remco Evenepoel by more than six minutes at this year’s Tour de France, Pogacar is expected to win the Vuelta by an even larger margin, showing no signs of fatigue despite a packed schedule.
