Villa near Suzuki deal as Martinez exit looms

Aston Villa are closing in on the signing of Parma goalkeeper Zion Suzuki for around £30m, with Emi Martinez's future increasingly uncertain.

Suzuki, a Japan international who played all four of his country's World Cup matches this summer, has been a top target should Martinez depart. The 23-year-old, born in America but qualifying for Japan through his mother, has made 59 appearances for Parma since joining from Urawa Red Diamonds in 2024.

Martinez's potential exit opens the door for a move to Juventus, despite director of football Damian Vidagany previously confirming the Argentine would stay. The 33-year-old, a 2022 World Cup winner, joined Villa from Arsenal for £17m in 2020 and made 256 appearances, helping end their 30-year trophy drought with the Europa League triumph in May.

Martinez missed Wednesday's Super Cup defeat to Paris St-Germain, with manager Unai Emery granting him a month off post-World Cup. He was expected to return to full training this week ahead of Villa's Premier League opener at Brighton on Sunday.
