Terry Frustrated Over Chelsea Caretaker Snub

Former Chelsea captain John Terry says he is 'frustrated' at being overlooked for a caretaker coaching role following Enzo Maresca's departure in January. Terry, who works two days a month as a part-time mentor in Chelsea's academy, was not included among the staff appointed to take temporary charge for matches against Manchester City and Fulham.

Full-time Under-21s coach Calum McFarlane was chosen as caretaker boss after Maresca left following a dramatic falling out behind the scenes. Terry told the Golf Life YouTube channel he felt he should have been part of the coaching setup, even if McFarlane took the team. 'Clearly the ownership, or whoever made those decisions - the sporting directors - have gone 'no' not to include me, for whatever reason,' Terry said.

BBC Sport understands part of Terry's frustration stems from holding all coaching qualifications up to the Uefa Pro Licence, plus a Fifa diploma in leadership. He previously served as assistant head coach at Aston Villa and Leicester City. By contrast, McFarlane holds only a Uefa B Licence, but officials felt his regular involvement with Maresca's Under-21s made him the more appropriate interim option.
