Middlesbrough have signed Sebastian Berhalter from the Vancouver Whitecaps for an undisclosed fee on a four‑year deal. The 25‑year‑old USA international netted 20 goals in 167 appearances for the MLS club.

Berhalter, who was born in London, is the son of former US coach Gregg and has spoken about his desire to grow as a player and person at his new club.

He may debut for Kim Hellberg’s side in the Carabao Cup first‑round tie against Wrexham on Friday, 7 August, as the club looks to bolster its midfield options.

The move adds experience and international pedigree to Middlesbrough’s squad, and Berhalter expressed enthusiasm about joining an environment that will help him continue improving.
