Scotland manager hunt: Why Moyes and Postecoglou are unrealistic targets

Scottish fans are calling for David Moyes or Ange Postecoglou to replace Steve Clarke, but the financial gap makes either appointment highly improbable. Clarke reportedly earned around £500,000 annually, a figure that pales against Premier League wages. The SFA simply cannot compete with top-flight salaries, leaving supporters dreaming of unrealistic candidates.

Moyes returned to Everton in 2025 on a multi-million-pound deal and has guided them to consecutive 13th-place finishes. While the 63-year-old expressed interest in the Scotland job back in 2021, saying it 'might be a consideration' at the right time, his current position and compensation package suggest that moment hasn't arrived. Former Scotland striker Kris Boyd acknowledged Moyes will likely manage Scotland someday, but not while his Premier League salary demands remain unmet.

Postecoglou brings international experience after managing Australia from 2013-2017, winning the 2015 Asian Cup and reaching the 2014 World Cup. His recent dismissal from Nottingham Forest after just 39 days followed a controversial sacking by Tottenham, despite delivering their first trophy in 17 years. However, his reported £5m yearly salary at Spurs and supposed £3m-a-season deal at Forest place him well beyond Scotland's budget.

Clarke's three major finals appearances raised expectations, yet the reality shows Scotland's limitations in attracting elite coaching talent. The SFA's search will ultimately reveal how ambitious they truly are when financial constraints outweigh fan aspirations.
