He pointed out that signing 27 players in a year signals a problem, and that the squad needs a starting right‑back, centre‑half, and centre‑midfielder – a tough ask after only 3 signings in the summer – plus additional wingers and a striker.

John Robertson added that scrutiny is intense; if early results are poor, simplistic pressure mounts. McInnes must be given time to build the spine of the team, which will require additional funds.
