Michael Edwards Leaves FSG Football Chief Role

Michael Edwards has departed his position as chief executive of football for Fenway Sports Group. The exit comes two years into a three-year contract that began in March 2024. FSG president Mike Gordon called the departure a planned transition following the completion of strategic priorities.

Edwards previously served as sporting director from 2016 to 2022, where he recruited Virgil van Dijk and Sadio Mane. Those signings helped the club end a 30-year drought by winning the league title in 2020. His second stint focused on managing the transition after the Jurgen Klopp era.

Liverpool now faces instability in the front office amid rumors that sporting director Richard Hughes might also leave. This leadership vacuum arrives as the team struggles to replace Mohamed Salah, who left at the end of the last campaign. Following a title win by Arne Slot in 2024-25, a poor subsequent season led to the appointment of Andoni Iraola.

Losing the architect of the club's most successful modern recruitment era creates a risk for Iraola. Without Edwards' proven track record in the market, Liverpool lacks the strategic continuity needed to find a replacement for Salah and stabilize the squad.
