Exeter City have brought back former captain Matt Taylor as manager on an interim contract that runs to the end of the campaign. The 44‑year‑old led the Grecians from 2018 to 2022, steering them to a runners‑up promotion from League Two before moving to Rotherham United. After a brief spell at Bristol Rovers, this marks Taylor’s first managerial role since his late‑2024 dismissal.

He replaces Dan Green, who had been steering the side after Gary Caldwell’s February exit for Wigan Athletic. Exeter sit 15th in League One, five points clear of the bottom four, and the board hopes Taylor’s familiarity will steady the ship. Interim chair Laurence Overend praised the former player’s knowledge of the club’s culture and model, saying continuity should boost squad confidence.

Taylor will take charge of tonight’s fixture at St James Park against Burton Albion, aiming to secure three points that could lift Exeter out of the relegation zone. He told supporters the club “holds a special place” in his heart after a decade as player and manager. The appointment delivers immediate stability, giving the team a clear leader for the final run‑in.
