Josh Windass: Wrexham's Unlikely Hero Chasing Play-Off Glory

Josh Windass may not celebrate his own goals, but the Wrexham striker is giving fans plenty to shout about as the club bids for a Championship play-off place. The 30-year-old admits he shows more delight when teammates score rather than when he finds the net himself.

Windass' route to this point has been winding. After being released from Huddersfield Town as a youngster, he started in eighth-tier football before getting a break at Accrington. He canceled his contract at Sheffield Wednesday last summer due to missed wages, joining Wrexham because, as he said, "everyone said they get promoted every year."

There is family pedigree at play. Hull City – the club Wrexham are jostling with for sixth place – won a Wembley play-off promotion to the Premier League courtesy of a spectacular strike from Windass' father Dean 18 years ago. The son has his own play-off heroics, having scored a 123rd-minute Wembley winner for Wednesday when they went up from League One three years ago – one of the rare occasions he actually celebrated.

As the Championship's final scenes approach, Wrexham will be hoping he can be the hero once more, even if he would be a reluctant one.
