Football academy overhaul needed

Former manager Tony Pulis argues England's football academy system requires fundamental changes after research revealed 91% of young players never reach professional level. While highlighting success stories like Arsenal's Max Dowman, he emphasizes the need to better support those who don't make the grade.

The Elite Player Performance Plan (EPPP) has operated for 15 years with over 12,000 boys currently in the system. Pulis documented the academy pathway in his Sky Sports documentary "Chasing the Dream" after identifying troubling cases, including Jeremy Wisten who took his own life after Manchester City released him.

Current academies provide exceptional facilities but fail to properly manage expectations or balance football with education. Pulis believes clubs must be more honest with players about their chances while ensuring coaches emphasize academic and personal development as much as athletic potential.
