FIFA and FIFPRO seal historic governance pact

FIFA has signed a memorandum of understanding with the global players’ union FIFPRO, giving footballers a formal say in the sport’s top‑level governance. For the first time the union holds a veto over key decisions and will sit as an observer with speaking rights on the FIFA Council. The pact ends pending lawsuits, which FIFPRO agreed to withdraw.

The agreement follows a series of legal actions, including FIFPRO’s October 2024 abuse‑of‑dominance claim over the congested match calendar. Earlier this week former France midfielder Lassana Diarra settled a damages case for €65m with FIFA and the Belgian FA after a botched transfer in 2014. New provisions let players cancel contracts, claim owed pay and seek six months’ extra compensation for abusive practices.

Players now gain stronger protection against tactics such as forced solo training, passport withholding or registration abuse, with clubs facing quicker sporting and financial sanctions for breaches. While the calendar dispute remains unresolved and the Professional Footballers’ Association has not dropped its own threat, the deal marks the first time the on‑field workforce holds measurable influence over FIFA’s rule‑making.
