The world players' union FIFPRO has condemned FIFA president Gianni Infantino's "abuse of presidential power" and called for change at the top of FIFA following his World Cup stake sale plans. Infantino was given the "full support" of FIFA's management board, despite abandoning his plan to sell stakes in a company to run the World Cup to private investors.

UEFA had initially threatened to boycott FIFA tournaments and reiterated that stance, demanding Infantino go. The Football Association also announced its intention to withdraw support for Infantino's re-election as president, scheduled for March 2027.

FIFPRO criticized the "cover-up" surrounding the situation and called for reforms to prevent "any individual, ever again, to drive unilateral decisions through the game." UEFA stated that conditions for reversing their boycott, including assurances such attempts would not be made again, have not been met, and that they have lost confidence in Infantino's presidency.

Infantino apologized for "mistakes" in the botched plans, which included a £30.1m incentive to national associations. FIFA stated a review would be conducted into the fiasco. The first test of UEFA's boycott will come at next month's FIFA U20 Women's World Cup, with senior national team play-offs for the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup also looming.
