Cameron Brannagan scored from the spot in Oxford United's 1-1 draw with Charlton Athletic on Saturday, finally ending a 675-day penalty drought for the League One side. This run stretched back to when Des Buckingham was manager and Italy were European champions. Gary Hudson, better known as Fred Big-Ox, had vowed not to shave his beard until the U's were awarded a penalty, using the stunt to raise money for the Joey Beauchamp Foundation, a mental health charity named after one of Oxford's greatest players. Hudson had worn a yellow wig and blue beard to matches for nearly two years, starting as a joke before Christmas when the drought hit 600 days.

He later decided to sponsor the look to support the charity. 'It was a surreal moment, I just threw everything up in the air,' Hudson said after the penalty. 'The funniest moment was when two of my friends walked past me without recognising me without the beard.' Hudson discarded his fake beard and shaved his real facial hair live on BBC Radio Oxford on Monday, feeling 'cold' afterwards. Oxford manager Matt Bloomfield thanked Hudson for his 'fantastic gesture', adding, 'I'm glad that we finally got a penalty, and also that there's been some money put towards a good cause.'.
