EFL Softens Transfer Penalty Rules

EFL clubs have voted to reduce the penalty transfer window restrictions for clubs failing to meet financial obligations, cutting the maximum ban from three windows to just one. The new regulations apply to clubs that don't keep up with payments for more than 30 days, representing a significant shift in the league's approach to financial discipline.

Under previous rules, Sheffield Wednesday suffered a three-window restriction when they twice failed to pay player wages on time in 2025. The EFL stated this change will make it "clearer what information clubs need to report to the League and when," while still allowing for case-by-case assessments of potential breaches.

The ruling came during the EFL's Annual General Meeting, where Rick Parry was re-elected as chairman for another three-year term. The league maintains the right to charge clubs in serious cases of persistent defaulting and clubs retain the right to appeal any penalties, creating a more balanced approach to financial enforcement.
