Celtic forced into Monday kickoff by concerts and Games

Celtic expressed disappointment after the Scottish Premiership announced their title‑defence will open on a Monday evening because the Commonwealth Games and two Calvin Harris concerts clashed with the schedule. The club said they made repeated representations to the SPFL and Police Scotland to secure a weekend fixture but were told there was "no choice" and now face Dundee on 3 August at 19:30 BST.

Glasgow 2026 will host cycling at the Sir Chris Hoy Arena, adjoining Celtic Park, on 1‑2 August, while Hampden will stage the two Harris shows the same weekend. Celtic argued a weekend slot would aid travelling fans, especially those from Ireland, and preserve the fixture’s status. All six opening matches are televised and attract TV audiences, with the season kicking off on 31 July.

Celtic’s forced Monday start could disrupt rhythm and limit fan attendance, a concern as they defend the crown against a Dundee side eager to start strong. The scheduling clash highlights the SPFL’s balancing act between sport and major events. The opening weekend proceeds as planned, with Rangers hosting Dundee United later on Friday this season.
