Advocaat steps down as Curacao coach

Former Rangers manager Dick Advocaat will miss Curacao's World Cup warm-up against Scotland after standing down for personal reasons. The 78-year-old Dutchman had led the Caribbean island to their first finals but stepped down due to his daughter's health concerns, missing his chance to become the oldest coach in World Cup history. "I've always said family is above football," he explained.

Advocaat described leading Curacao—with a population of just 150,000—to the World Cup as the "craziest thing" he'd achieved in nearly four decades of management. The Dutchman guided them to top their CONCACAF qualifying group ahead of Jamaica, Trinidad & Tobago and Bermuda to reach the finals for the first time in the nation's history.

Fred Rutten, 63, will replace Advocaat and take charge of Curacao for their Group E campaign against Germany, Ivory Coast and Ecuador. The former PSV Eindhoven manager had most recently served as assistant to Ruud van Nistelrooy. Scotland faces Curacao in their final warm-up match before beginning their own tournament against Haiti on June 13, with Brazil and Morocco also in Group C.
