While some organisations cut back on climate commitments, 11th Hour Racing is pushing to embed environmental and social standards into the rules of competitive sailing through The Ocean Race, a leading round-the-world contest for crewed foiling yachts. Founded in 2010 by Wendy Schmidt, Rob Mac Millan, and Jeremy Pochman, the philanthropic entity funds environmental solutions and supports teams and events. President Michelle Carnevale says a sport reliant on the ocean has a responsibility to protect it.

As a partner to The Ocean Race Atlantic — a 3,000-nautical-mile race from New York City to Lorient, France — 11th Hour Racing advised on a 50:50 gender-balanced crew rule to increase female representation. Winner Francesca Clapcich, part of the 11th Hour Racing Team in 2023, says the organisation proves performance and purpose can coexist. The team also staged a US east coast tour connecting with grassroots sailing groups to promote ocean health and inclusivity.

As IMOCA's sustainability partner, 11th Hour Racing supported a rule cutting carbon emissions by 15 per cent (60 tonnes) in new boat builds between 2025 and 2028. All IMOCA teams must carry at least one Rise certified sail, made with 30 per cent less carbon per kg. The fleet was also fitted to collect ocean measurements from the Gulf Stream during the race.
