McLaren's Lando Norris secured pole position for the Hungarian GP, but team principal Andrea Stella called it an overachievement thanks to execution and maximizing potential. Norris became the first non-Mercedes driver to take pole this season, edging Lewis Hamilton by 0.012s before Hamilton received a three-place grid penalty.

McLaren's latest upgrade focused on new floor geometry and wing tweaks, while Ferrari's spec remained relatively static since Miami. Stella insisted Ferrari still has the best chassis for corner grip, particularly in braking zones like Turn 1 and Turn 12. Data showed Hamilton's Ferrari carried more speed through slow corners, but Norris gained on straights thanks to Mercedes powertrain deployment.

The Hungaroring's patched track surface complicated comparisons. Hamilton braked later and turned more smoothly at Turn 1, gaining ~0.07s in Sector 1. Norris countered with better traction out of Turn 5 and higher top speeds. In the final sector, Hamilton's superior slow-corner poise nearly erased Norris's advantage, but the McLaren driver's final Q3 lap — aided by track evolution after Max Verstappen's spin — proved decisive.

Hamilton's first lap was scrappy and slower; his provisional pole time was beaten by Norris's cleaner run. The result highlighted McLaren's progress in medium-high speed corners while confirming Ferrari's enduring low-speed strength.
