Norris: McLaren pace 'shocking' despite British GP result

Lando Norris described McLaren's pace at the British Grand Prix as "pretty shocking," despite securing a fourth-place finish. A year after a dominant one-two at Silverstone, the McLaren MCL40 struggled, with Norris feeling the car was difficult to drive and unpredictable. While pleased with the points scored, Norris emphasized the significant performance deficit, stating McLaren has "a hell of a lot to improve." This sentiment is echoed by team principal Andrea Stella, who confirmed the pace gap to rivals.

Stella detailed that McLaren is likely half a second slower than Ferrari and Mercedes on race pace, with Red Bull appearing closer. He attributed this deficit partly to a lack of synchronized upgrades compared to rivals, who seem to gain around three tenths of a second per upgrade package. The low-grip Silverstone conditions also exacerbated the car's instability, favoring competitors with more predictable handling.

Despite finishing fourth, Norris's championship hopes are fading, sitting 82 points behind leader Kimi Antonelli. McLaren also trails Mercedes by 154 points in the Constructors' Championship. Teammate Oscar Piastri is further back in 11th place after an early incident. The team's recent form has seen only one podium in the last five races, a stark contrast to their earlier season challenges for wins in Japan and Miami, indicating a need for substantial development to regain competitiveness.
