McLaren Admit 2026 Season Below Expectations as Monaco GP Approaches

McLaren team principal Andrea Stella concedes the 2026 Formula 1 campaign has fallen short of targets after both Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri failed to score points in Canada. The result marked another setback in a season plagued by reliability issues and strategic errors across multiple race weekends.

Mercedes commands a commanding 113-point lead over McLaren in the Constructors' Championship while Ferrari sits 72 points ahead. McLaren's early-season promise from Japan and Miami has evaporated, with their upgraded front wing abandoned after practice sessions in Canada. Stella acknowledged the team has "lots to take away and review" from their struggles.

Despite the setbacks, Stella maintains McLaren can still compete. Their car's strength in low-speed corners could favor Monaco, where Norris triumphed last year ahead of Charles Leclerc. However, the tight street circuit still demands medium and high-speed performance through sections like Tabac and Swimming Pool.

McLaren's development trajectory over the past three years has stalled, and they trail significantly in the championship battle. While technical improvements show promise, the team faces an uphill climb to re-enter title contention with six races in eight weeks beginning in Monte Carlo.
