Formula 1's 2026 regulations, with a near 50:50 split between electrical and internal combustion power, are creating a muddled picture of driver performance for fans. Recent races at 'energy-starved' venues like Silverstone and Spa highlighted how fractional differences in driving technique, such as throttle position, can lead to significant lap time discrepancies due to varying electrical deployment.

Haas team boss Ayao Komatsu believes the sport has become too complicated, with software interventions obscuring the true contribution of drivers. He argues that drivers shouldn't need to understand every software detail to perform; instead, they should be able to drive instinctively. The current system's sensitivity means small errors in deployment can cost tenths of a second, making it difficult for spectators to gauge genuine driver shortcomings versus technical issues.

While pre-Miami changes offered some relief, Komatsu sees them as temporary fixes. F1 plans a gradual shift from 2027 onwards, increasing the internal combustion engine's power contribution and reducing electrical input. By 2028, the split is expected to be 60/40, with further reductions planned for 2031, aiming to simplify the sport and restore control to the drivers.
