Honda Chooses Single Mid‑Season Power Unit Upgrade for 2026 F1

Honda Racing Corporation confirmed it will deploy only one power‑unit upgrade this season, despite receiving two ADUO tokens. The Japanese engine house, linked to Aston Martin, has chosen a single mid‑season revamp aimed for the August break. The decision follows a 4% power gap behind the Red Bull‑Ford benchmark.

ADUO, FIA’s Additional Development and Upgrade Opportunities, allocates extra dyno hours and cost‑cap relief based on a manufacturer’s deviation from the benchmark. Honda, positioned more than 4% below Red Bull‑Ford, earned two tokens for 2026 and another two for 2027. The club plans to split work between its Sakura plant groups.

Shintaro Orihara, Honda’s trackside GM, said the summer update will be a “reasonable step,” not a miracle. While Audi and Ferrari are rolling out first‑batch upgrades, Honda focuses on a single, substantial change. The engine change will likely coincide with a major aero refresh from Aston Martin, though timing hinges on sign‑off.

With Aston Martin currently trailblazing the back of the grid, the late‑season boost could lift the team from its recent one‑point haul in Monaco. Honda’s cautious approach reflects the need to balance performance gains against reliability and weight concerns. The upgrade’s impact will reveal whether the partnership can close the gap to front‑row rivals.
