FIA widens ADUO relief, gives Honda extra boost

FIA officials have widened the 2026 ADUO framework, granting extra leeway to power‑unit makers that lag behind the performance benchmark. Honda, still struggling to match rivals after a shaky start to the season, now qualifies for the top tier of the sliding‑scale relief. The change lifts the deficit trigger from 8% to 10% on ICE power for the 2026 power‑unit rollout.

Under ADUO, manufacturers fall behind by 2% increments and receive proportional cost‑cap exemptions and additional dyno time. A deficit between 8% and 10% now earns an $8 million allowance for the current year, plus up to 230 extra operation hours in the next development window. These resources aim to close the gap without breaching the overall budget cap during the 2026 season.

The revised schedule pushes the first performance review to Montreal’s Canadian Grand Prix, with subsequent checks at Hungary and Mexico. Honda will have to translate the financial boost into hardware upgrades before the next ADUO period, a task that could reshape its competitiveness for the remainder of the season. Immediate impact will be measured in lap‑time gains at the next race across the championship.
