FIA and Liberty Media pressure engine makers ahead of Spanish GP

Negotiations over the 2027 power‑unit rulebook have reached a fever pitch as the FIA and Liberty Media push engine builders toward a compromise before the Spanish Grand Prix on 12‑14 June. Officials want to shift the current near‑50:50 electric‑combustion split, but Ferrari and Audi have retreated from an earlier consensus, forcing a rushed resolution for all and cost pressures.

The FIA tabled a concrete proposal: raise fuel flow by 14%, adding roughly 50 kW of combustion power while trimming 50 kW from the MGU‑K. That would move output to 450 kW internal and 300 kW electric, eliminating super‑clipping and battery‑management headaches in qualifying. Audi and Ferrari argue such a change would jeopardise reliability, cost and the benefits secured under the ADUO agreement.

Parallel talks have already green‑lit a 40‑50 point aerodynamic cut for 2027 cars, aiming to lower drag and cornering speeds while encouraging energy‑recovery phases. Combining that with a modest 5% fuel‑flow increase could meet a 60/40 power split without overhauling engines still in development. The FIA and FIA hope to lock the final package by Sunday, leaving teams little room for further debate.
