F1 Engine Rules Deadline Looms

Formula 1 faces a critical deadline with 2027 power unit rules to be finalized within the next 15 days. Teams discuss a substantial shift toward a 60/40 thermal-to-electric power split, aiming to restore the "natural" driving feel that characterized the previous generation of cars. The mixed reception to current regulations has intensified these talks, though implementing changes would require significant car design modifications.

Implementing the proposed 60/40 power split demands a larger fuel tank due to increased combustion power, potentially raising output from 530 to approximately 600 horsepower. This major technical overhaul requires a supermajority vote from at least four out of five engine manufacturers. An anonymous team principal confirmed a two-week decision window exists, with the worst-case scenario involving three fewer laps per race to accommodate fuel constraints.

The battle lines appear drawn among manufacturers, with Honda and Red Bull reportedly supporting the change while Ferrari and Audi remain unclear. Mercedes may be forced to comply if rivals present a united front. The decision timeframe is closing rapidly, with mid-May marking the point when implementing such significant technical changes becomes practically impossible.
