Stella: F1 Power Unit Changes Likely Delayed to 2028

McLaren team principal Andrea Stella believes further changes to Formula 1's power unit regulations are necessary, but the timeline means any significant tweaks would likely arrive in 2028 rather than next season. F1 recently implemented initial refinements to improve qualifying and reduce the extreme closing speeds seen in early 2026 races. Last weekend's Miami Grand Prix marked the first running under the tweaked rules, showing modest improvements.

More substantial improvements would require hardware modifications, such as increasing fuel flow to extract more horsepower from the internal combustion engine or installing bigger batteries so cars don't run out of energy so quickly. However, an increase in fuel flow would impact the fuel tank and chassis downstream, and several teams have already planned to stick with their current chassis for next season. "Hardware adjustments to the power unit in order to improve Formula 1 in general, I personally think are required," Stella said.

Stella urged F1 stakeholders to finalize discussions before the summer break to give manufacturers enough lead time for 2028. Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff said the series is already in a good place but would not oppose tweaks. Alpine boss Steve Nielsen stressed teams need to know the 2027 regulations now, warning that major changes in the next few months would stretch their ability to react.
