F1 engine tweak to 60‑40 split after driver backlash

Formula 1 will shift the power‑unit mix to a 60‑40 internal‑combustion‑to‑electric ratio by 2028 after drivers complained the current 50‑50 split stifles qualifying. The change will lift ICE power from 400kW to 450kW while cutting electrical output to 300kW.

The compromise follows a month of talks led by Ferrari and Audi, who urged a staged approach. FIA officials said the plan will keep overtaking power at 350kW but increase energy‑harvest limits to 375kW in 2027 and 400kW in 2028, speeding recovery.

Red Bull’s engine currently leads, while Honda lags 8‑10% behind, missing the extra $19m funding tranche. Mercedes receives one upgrade this year and another next, whereas all other manufacturers can make two.

These adjustments aim to restore flat‑out qualifying and balance power‑unit performance, directly affecting race strategy and season standings.
