FIA Unveils 2027 F1 Power Mix Shift

The FIA has outlined a 2027 plan that will tilt Formula 1’s power balance toward combustion engines, raising ICE output by roughly 50kW while trimming energy‑recuperation power by the same margin. This change follows a 2026 season where hybrid balance sparked debate.

Earlier this year, Miami’s temporary tweaks—boosting super‑clipping from 250kW to 350kW and capping qualifying harvests at 7MJ—showed that small adjustments could tighten competition. Drivers complained that the current 50:50 split forces them to slow in high‑speed corners to conserve battery, eroding lap times.

The 2027 proposal aims to restore a more traditional driving style. Teams will need to redesign power units to accommodate the added fuel‑flow, a process that will require several months of development before the World Motor Sport Council can ratify the package.

With the new rules on the table, manufacturers and teams will focus on balancing the increased ICE torque against the reduced hybrid boost, a shift that could reshape overtaking dynamics and race strategies across the next season.
