Audi pushes for stability as F1 eyes 2027 engine overhaul

Ahead of the Canadian Grand Prix the FIA settled on an “agreement in principle” for a 60/40 split between internal‑combustion and electric power in 2027. In Montreal Audi’s Gernot Dollner warned that sweeping changes would clash with the brand’s recent entry and its need to stay within the cost cap. He urged stability as the team refines its new power unit. The proposal also targets emissions reductions.

Audi argues that major hardware revisions would demand fresh capital and multiple approvals from the Volkswagen Group hierarchy. Dollner said the firm could accept modest tweaks – for example a 5% rise in fuel flow paired with a 40‑50 point down‑force reduction – because they avoid costly redesigns. Such limited adjustments fit its strategy of incremental optimisation. Audi believes this approach safeguards its competitive timeline.

While drivers like Max Verstappen cheer a hybrid‑heavy formula, manufacturers Ferrari, Honda and others weigh technical and financial trade‑offs. Audi’s stance forces regulators to consider a less radical path for 2027, leaving the sport’s power‑unit roadmap unsettled but preserving the German marque’s ability to improve its current drivetrain rather than fund a regulatory overhaul. Consequently, the championship’s technical direction remains a negotiation point.
