F1 Plans 12 Sprint Races by 2027 with Format Changes

Formula 1 is planning to double sprint races from six to 12 per season starting in 2027, as Liberty Media pushes for more on-track action across all three race weekend days. The sport's commercial rightsholder believes sprint races generate greater fan engagement and broadcast interest, though they increase the workload for drivers and teams.

F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali revealed the sport is exploring format changes for regular race weekends to add competitive elements on Fridays. The goal is to ensure spectators see meaningful action every day, rather than just two practice sessions. Domenicali acknowledged rookie drivers face challenges during sprint weekends due to limited track time, suggesting possible solutions like extended practice sessions.

The calendar expansion faces logistical constraints, with F1 committed to maintaining 24 races annually. While new venues in Southeast Asia and Africa are targeted for 2029, European circuits may fill short-term gaps. The return of races like Portugal's Algarve International Circuit appears likely, while Turkey's Istanbul Park remains in negotiations for a comeback.
