Formula 1 is planning a significant expansion of its Sprint weekend format for the 2027 season, with its president Stefano Domenicali indicating that a "bigger number" of these condensed race weekends will be announced soon. The Sprint, which debuted five years ago, has grown to six events per season and has been credited with boosting track attendance and television viewership. Domenicali stated that Formula 1 has a "duty to be brave and to think out of the box," citing the 150,000 attendees at Silverstone on a Friday as evidence of the format's appeal.

While the exact number of Sprints for 2027 is yet to be confirmed, sources suggest it could be between nine and 10 events. This expansion reflects Formula 1's strategy to provide more action-packed weekends for fans. The sport is also preparing to reveal its full race calendar for the upcoming season "very, very soon," according to Domenicali. This announcement is anticipated to include details on the calendar's structure and potentially other format changes.

The 2027 calendar is already set to see the return of the Portuguese Grand Prix and the Turkish Grand Prix. Conversely, the Dutch Grand Prix will be removed after the current season, and the Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona will enter a rotation with the Belgian Grand Prix, returning in 2028. These calendar shifts signal ongoing adjustments by Formula 1 to optimize its global schedule and maintain fan engagement across different regions.
