Miami Grand Prix sprint schedule and new qualifying format

Miami will host the second sprint weekend of the 2026 Formula 1 season from 1‑3 May, with practice, sprint qualifying, the sprint race and the main Grand Prix all scheduled in local time. BBC Sport supplies the full timetable, including UK broadcast slots and a brief weather outlook for the waterfront circuit.

2026 introduces a modest rule tweak as Cadillac joins as the eleventh grid entry. Sprint qualifying now runs three knockout phases—SQ1, SQ2 and SQ3—lasting 12, 10 and eight minutes, with the six slowest cars eliminated in the first two sessions rather than five. The resulting grid sets the line‑up for a 100‑km sprint, awarding points to the top eight.

Finishing positions in the sprint translate directly into championship points: eight for the winner, decreasing to one for eighth place. Those scores add to the drivers’ totals before the main Grand Prix, making the Miami sprint a valuable opportunity for early‑season gains.

British Russell topped the Chinese sprint earlier this year, beating Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton, and will aim to repeat the performance on the Miami streets. With subsequent sprint stops slated for Canada, Silverstone, Zandvoort and Singapore, each venue now carries extra weight in shaping the 2026 title fight.
