OpenAI pushes global standards for safe youth AI use

OpenAI argues that AI can unlock personalized learning for students, language practice, interview prep, and creative projects, much like the mid‑20th‑century literacy boom depended on printed material and teachers. The company stresses that safe, age‑appropriate access must be built into products, not left to parents alone, to reduce barriers for underserved youth and boost workforce readiness.

At the upcoming G7 Leaders’ Summit in Évian, France, officials will debate a proposal from OpenAI to create an international Youth AI Safety Institute. The body would coordinate governments, researchers, civil‑society groups and industry to share evidence, publish guidance and maintain standards beyond a single summit. It could build on the existing Youth AI Safety Institute funded by the OpenAI Foundation.

OpenAI outlines a safety framework requiring reliable age estimation, annual risk assessments, transparent parental controls and bans on targeted advertising to minors. The company says ChatGPT now defaults to stricter safeguards when age is unclear, blocks graphic content, and prompts users toward offline help for self‑harm concerns. These measures aim to make AI a supportive learning tool rather than a substitute for human guidance.
