McLaren team principal Andrea Stella has clarified the recurring straightline speed deficit affecting Lando Norris during Formula 1 qualifying for the Bahrain GP. The issue, which also impacted Norris in Baku, stems from a lack of acceleration and top speed in the power-limited section of the track. Stella noted the deficit is difficult to diagnose due to complex regulations and sensor limitations, estimating a lap time loss of 0.1–0.2 seconds.
The problem is not necessarily a power unit failure but could involve chassis, drag, or other parameters. Norris confirmed the deficit affects every straight, hurting his performance despite good exits. The issue was most noticeable between Turns 13–14 and on the back straight.
McLaren avoids blaming Mercedes’ High Performance Powertrains division, emphasizing responsibility for the car’s performance. Further adjustments are planned for the Singapore GP.
