Google Maps' Timeline feature logs everywhere you go, which can feel like an invasion of privacy. While Google now stores location history locally on your device unless backed up, many still want to disable tracking.

To turn off Google Maps Timeline, open the app and tap your profile picture. Select Your timeline, hit the three dots, then choose Location and privacy settings. Select Timeline. From the dropdown, choose Turn off to stop the feature but keep existing data, or Turn off and delete activity to clear all history.

You can also manage auto-delete settings: scroll to Auto-delete and pick to delete activity older than 3, 18, or 36 months. On the main Timeline page, tap the Backup icon to enable or disable encrypted cloud backup. Use the Pencil icon to edit or delete a day. On the Location & privacy page, you can Export Timeline data or Delete range of Timeline data.

These settings are device-specific, so repeat on other devices. To re-enable, follow the same steps and select Turn on.
