Biospring Partners has led an undisclosed growth investment in Serán Bioscience, a contract development and manufacturing organization based in Bend, Oregon. Existing investors Vivo Capital and Bain Capital Life Sciences also participated, along with Serán’s executive leadership, including co-founder and chief executive Dan Smithey. The funding will help Serán accelerate its expansion across clinical to commercial services, including particle engineering and commercial-scale manufacturing.

Serán’s main expansion project is a new greenfield commercial facility in Bend, scheduled for completion in the third quarter of 2027. The multi-suite site will support OEB4 manufacturing for oral, pulmonary and other delivery modalities. It will offer commercial-scale particle engineering, including spray drying and nano-milling, as well as finished dose capabilities such as granulation, tableting, coating, encapsulation and dry powder filling for inhalation products.

The facility will connect with Serán’s recently completed adjacent packaging and logistics facility, which provides packaging, labeling, unit-level serialization and global cold-chain distribution. Together the sites will form an integrated campus of more than 200,000 square feet. Serán has more than 200 team members, over 150 of whom are scientists and engineers.

The company plans to hire up to 150 additional employees as the expansion progresses. “This investment fuels Serán’s growing clinical business in tandem with its transition to commercial-scale manufacturing,” said Socrates Zacharias, a principal at Biospring Partners. “… As the industry develops increasingly complex oral drugs, we’re seeing growing demand for spray drying capabilities.” Biospring is a healthcare growth buyout firm that invests in pharma services, including specialty outsourced manufacturing and clinical trial services companies. Founded in 2020, it has more than $500 million in assets under management. Palo Alto-based Vivo Capital has around $5.8 billion in assets under management.
