Marissa Mayer's Dazzle Uses Photos for AI Assistant

Former Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer has launched Dazzle, a personal AI assistant that analyzes users' camera rolls to understand their lives, rather than relying on email or calendar data. The app, which raised an $8 million seed round last December, aims to uncover hobbies, interests, food preferences, and social connections through photo analysis. Mayer argues that photos contain richer personal data than text-based apps, stating 'if a photo is worth a thousand words, your camera roll is worth millions.' Dazzle offers two core functions: immediate task assistance (like populating calendars from event flyers) and personalized idea generation (such as vacation or gift suggestions).

During testing, the assistant correctly inferred Mayer's family enjoys escape rooms and suggested Mediterranean travel spots based on user photo history, though it showed some blind spots, like forgetting a child's roller skating ability. Mayer positions Dazzle as a privacy-focused alternative to competitors like Meta's Muse and Instinct, emphasizing that users may prefer sharing photo libraries over sensitive email or message data. The app prioritizes privacy by discarding flagged sensitive information.
