Survivors of the 2023 Lahaina wildfire on Maui are moving into rebuilt homes but finding their mailboxes empty. The U.S. Postal Service has stopped delivering to individual mailboxes at reconstructed properties, classifying them as new subdivisions requiring cluster mailboxes instead. Residents like Jennifer Williams and Donna Butterfield returned to neighborhoods such as the Shark Pit and downtown Lahaina, where their original mailboxes survived the flames.

Williams, who moved back to Ilikahi Street in June with her family, received mail for weeks before delivery abruptly stopped. A postmaster explained the new classification but could not specify when or where cluster boxes would be installed. Calvin Cox noted carriers still deliver to nearby homes that did not burn, driving past rebuilt houses daily.

Hawaii's congressional delegation protested, arguing residents are returning to a historic community at the same delivery points. This postal policy adds to rebuilding hurdles, including housing shortages, insurance delays, and a stalled $4 billion settlement.
