Halo: Campaign Evolved Handheld Performance Review

Almost a quarter of a century after Halo: Combat Evolved—one of the most important FPS games of all time—Microsoft and Halo Studios (formerly 343 Industries) are releasing a full remake titled Halo: Campaign Evolved, rebuilt in Unreal Engine 5. The game includes the classic campaign plus a handful of extra missions set about a year before the main events, starring Master Chief and Sergeant Johnson. It features online and split-screen co-op (split-screen console-only) but no PvP multiplayer, and marks the first Halo title on PlayStation, though it may be the last given Microsoft's recent exclusivity decisions.

Built on UE5, the game leverages Lumen, Nanite, and Mega Lights as its three flagship technologies. Lumen-based global illumination cannot be disabled, making minimum PC requirements fairly steep. Upscaling and frame generation support all three major vendors: DLSS, FSR, and XeSS, though XeSS is unavailable in the Xbox app/Microsoft Store version.

This handheld performance review evaluates how the game runs on the most popular PC handhelds available today and provides optimized settings for each handheld featured in the review.
