Valve shipped SteamOS 3.8 to the stable channel, expanding the OS beyond the upcoming Steam Machine to DIY builds and handhelds. The update upgrades the Arch Linux base, switches default display to Wayland, and refreshes the KDE Plasma desktop to KDE 6.4.3. Users can now extract more of the Steam Deck experience from devices like the Lenovo Legion Go amid recent price hikes for enthusiasts.

Beyond UI tweaks, 3.8 adds HDMI Variable Refresh Rate support and VRR frame pacing thanks to AMD’s Linux driver work. The LAVD CPU scheduler is available via “steamosctl set‑cpu‑scheduler lavd,” and Bluetooth wake‑from‑sleep returns on LCD‑based Decks. Graphics drivers now deliver consistent performance between game and desktop modes, fixing prior regressions across supported hardware configurations.

The release also widens handheld compatibility, listing devices such as the One XPlayer F1 series, GPD Win 5, Anbernic Win600, and upcoming Intel Arc handhelds. Video memory handling improves on discrete‑GPU rigs, while HDR, per‑display scaling, and VRR work on external monitors. With these upgrades, hobbyists can build true PC‑console hybrids without waiting for Valve’s commercial Steam Machine in the market today.
