A Chinese workhorse rocket exploded in flight, raising concerns about the YF‑100 main engine, the most widely used in China’s launch fleet.

The YF‑100, fueled by liquid oxygen and kerosene, delivers 270,000 pounds of thrust at sea level and has powered the Long March 7 and its 7A variant for a decade.

If the failure stems from the YF‑100, it could ripple through nine rockets, from Long March 5 to Long March 8, and even the new Long March 10 that uses modified YF‑100 tech.

The setback may delay the Chang’e 7 lunar mission, slated for launch on a Long March 5 rocket. That vehicle, equipped with YF‑100 boosters, will carry an orbiter, lander, rover and mini‑hopper toward Shackleton crater at the Moon’s South Pole.

Both China and NASA are racing to establish operations at the resource‑rich South Pole, making the timely success of Chang’e 7 critical for asserting lunar presence. The incident also underscores the need for rigorous testing of common components to avoid cascading delays across multiple missions.
