PS6 Memory Leak: 30GB GDDR7 for Console, 24GB for Handheld

A new leak from tech analyst Kepler L2 suggests Sony's next-generation PlayStation 6 console will feature up to 30 GB of GDDR7 memory, while a companion handheld system could pack 24 GB of LPDDR5X memory. The predictions emerged from a NeoGAF discussion where the analyst outlined unusual memory configurations, including a clamshell module setup for the home console.

The PS6 memory configuration would use 3 GB GDDR7 modules on a 160-bit bus, potentially delivering 640 GB/s bandwidth—11% higher than the PS5 Pro's 576 GB/s. Commenters expressed skepticism about the feasibility of such a setup with only 4 GB modules available. The handheld variant, codenamed Project Canis, would use low-power DRAM typical for premium mobile devices, positioning it competitively against the ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X.

These generous memory allocations face practical challenges including pricing and availability amid ongoing supply chain issues. The memory demands have already fueled rumors that Sony might delay its next-gen systems beyond the previously projected 2027 launch window. Sources indicate Sony is balancing cutting-edge specifications against manufacturing realities and market conditions.
