Microsoft revamps Windows 11 GPU driver updates to stop downgrades

Microsoft is overhauling how Windows 11 handles GPU driver installs after users complained the OS would silently roll back newer graphics drivers to older versions shipped with OEM PCs. A new two‑part identification model will replace the previous four‑layer stack, merging the Hardware ID and Computer Hardware ID into a single target. This change aims to guarantee the newest compatible driver is applied.

OEMs often preload machines with drivers that are months out of date, meaning Windows Update frequently skips the latest releases. Under the revised Windows Hardware Compatibility Program, the combined HWID/CHID key will force Windows Update to fetch the most recent GPU package, eliminating the lag that left many gamers and creators on stale software for Windows 11 22H2 and future builds.

A second feature, Cloud‑Initiated Driver Recovery, will automatically roll back any driver flagged as problematic, pulling a stable version from Microsoft’s cloud without user intervention. Microsoft targets a September rollout for the recovery service and hopes the broader driver‑management overhaul will be in place by the end of 2026, possibly extending into early 2027, across all supported devices.
