Logitech G Study: Esports Career Aspirations Surge Among Gen Z

A new Logitech G study reveals esports is entering its most transformative era yet, with 8 per cent of global respondents saying they would choose professional gaming as a career if starting over. The research, based on 18,000 participants across 12 countries, found that Gen Z respondents ranked pro gaming among their top career ambitions at 15 per cent, compared to just 3 per cent of Boomers. Perceptions of gaming as a legitimate career path are shifting dramatically, with over half of respondents globally recognizing esports as a professional path.

The study highlights generational divides in career aspirations, with younger respondents showing significantly higher interest in gaming careers. Markets like Brazil (87 per cent), South Korea (82 per cent), and China (79 per cent) show the strongest support for esports legitimacy, while several European nations remain more skeptical. Viewership data reinforces this cultural momentum, with the 2024 League of Legends World Final drawing a 50 million peak global audience. Live attendance is also booming, exemplified by the 62,000 spectators at the 2025 Honor of Kings KPL Grand Finals in Beijing.

Despite this growth, barriers persist. Financial risk (42 per cent), high competition levels (34 per cent), and lack of parental support (31 per cent) remain top concerns. However, most respondents believe these challenges are solvable through increased media coverage, professional training facilities, and clearer education pathways. The global esports audience reached 611 million in 2024, with the industry valued at $2.1bn and projected to reach $7.5bn by 2030.
