Intel Resolves 18A Yield Issues, Hits 30K Wafers Monthly

Intel has resolved the yield issues that plagued its 18A node, according to Blue Fin Research Partners. The company achieved sustainable high-volume production for its latest manufacturing process, addressing problems that had persisted since late last year when yields were improving by roughly 7% monthly. This breakthrough means defect rates now likely fall in the D0=0.1 to D0=0.2 range for a mature node.

Production now runs at approximately 30,000 wafers per month across Intel's Fab 52 in Phoenix and Hillsboro, Oregon. This capacity meets current demands for the first 18A product, codenamed Panther Lake processors, though additional capacity will be needed for other products. The company has begun 18A-P risk production at the D1X site in Oregon, planning to transfer volume manufacturing to Fab 62.

Early 14A results from sample production look promising, with initial high-volume production planned for the D1X fab and a second facility in Ohio. External customers can expect offerings focused on 18A-P, 18A-PT, and the upcoming 14A node slated for risk production in 2028 and high-volume manufacturing in 2029.
