Intel Cancels Core Ultra 9 290K Plus 'Arrow Lake' CPU

According to a new report, Intel is reportedly canceling its flagship Core Ultra 9 290K Plus processor, part of the upcoming "Arrow Lake Refresh" lineup. The refresh was expected to launch in March or April. Instead, Intel will focus on the Core Ultra 7 270K Plus, which features 8 P-cores, 16 E-cores, and a 5.5 GHz boost clock.

The decision to drop the top-end CPU likely stems from potential product overlap. The 290K Plus would have offered only slightly improved clock speeds compared to the 270K Plus. Intel already has a Core Ultra 9 285K SKU, creating a crowded high-end market. This streamlining could help Intel focus on the next-generation "Nova Lake" launch.

The "Arrow Lake Refresh" was intended to provide a performance bump before Nova Lake's arrival. By simplifying its offerings, Intel can better manage manufacturing and supply chains. While the exact reasoning is still unclear, a more efficient product stack could allow the company to focus its resources on future CPU generations.

Consumers will still get updated CPUs, though the flagship model's absence may disappoint some enthusiasts. It suggests Intel is prioritizing overall value and strategic resource allocation. The focus on the Ultra 7 suggests the company is aiming to refine its process and prepare for the next wave of innovation in the CPU market.
