iFixit Disputes ASUS ROG Flow Z13 Repair Score

ASUS's ROG Flow Z13 gaming 2-in-1, initially lauded with a 10/10 repairability score, has received a more critical assessment from iFixit. The popular repair advocacy group awarded the device a 7/10 after a detailed teardown, highlighting discrepancies in scoring methodologies.

iFixit's analysis found several commendable design elements, such as a screwed-down display, accessible SSD, and modular battery and camera components. However, the teardown revealed significant repair challenges, including a complex fan replacement requiring heat-sink removal and liquid metal reapplication. Furthermore, the wireless card, ports, and RAM are soldered to the motherboard, necessitating motherboard replacement for failures of these parts.

iFixit also criticized ASUS's provided manual for lacking troubleshooting and board-level repair details, and questioned repair availability and cost. The group pointed out inconsistent scoring across platforms, with Amazon listing a 9.3 score, suggesting a broader issue with self-reported, unaudited repairability metrics that allow manufacturers to manipulate scores.
