GTA VI launch likely to spark console shortage

Retailers familiar with console supply chains warn that the November 19 launch of Take-Two's Grand Theft Auto VI will outpace available hardware. A senior games buyer, speaking on condition of anonymity, said component shortages mean stores won’t receive the units needed before the title’s debut. Analysts predict the surge could ripple through Q4 earnings for both hardware makers and publishers.

The shortage stems from the same semiconductor crunch that forced recent price hikes on both Xbox and PlayStation consoles. Microsoft confirmed that demand “definitively” exceeds supply despite factories running at capacity, while Sony’s chief Hiroki Totoki told investors the 2026 inventory is secured. GTA VI pre‑orders start at $79.99, adding pressure to an already tight market.

With Xbox prices set to rise three months before the game’s release and supply chains still strained, consumers should expect higher sticker prices or delayed purchases. Retailers plan to allocate limited stock to high‑traffic outlets, leaving smaller stores empty. Even loyal fans may have to wait months for a system that can run the game at its intended performance.
