Amazon Drone Delivery Expansion to 500 US Areas by 2026

Amazon aims to expand its Prime Air delivery drone service sixfold, targeting nearly 500 cities and towns across the United States by the end of 2026. Launches are set for Chicago, Cleveland, Atlanta, Syracuse, and Boise, with each site covering roughly 175 square miles and offering deliveries within 30 to 60 minutes. Prime Air currently operates from Amazon warehouses in 10 cities across seven states, including Phoenix, Tampa, and several Texas locations.

Competitors are also scaling up rapidly. Walmart has partnered with Wing and Zipline to surpass 1 million drone deliveries, planning expansion to over 270 stores by 2027. Zipline, initially focused on medical deliveries in Africa, has made over 2.7 million deliveries globally and aims for 1 million daily U.S. deliveries by 2029. DoorDash recently earned FAA Part 135 certification for its DoorDash Air program, though operations remain in early development.

Despite the promise of faster, lower-emission deliveries, challenges persist. Drones are limited to items under five pounds, and adverse weather can ground flights. Safety incidents involving Amazon drones—including crashes in Arizona and Texas—have prompted FAA and NTSB investigations. Noise pollution remains a major concern, with residents comparing drone sounds to leaf blowers and filing complaints. Privacy worries also arise as drones fly over residential areas.

Zipline maintains the strongest safety record with backup parachutes, while Amazon and Wing have faced notable incidents. As the FAA continues oversight, community feedback will shape the future of widespread drone delivery in the U.S.
